サイ・ヤング賞受賞経験を持つ、史上2人目のNPB選手となったDeNAの新外国人トレバー・バウアー投手が、24日に横浜市内のホテルで入団会見を行った。バウアーは「ここに来られて本当に嬉しい」と述べ、日本でのデビューについて「少し時間がかかるかもしれないが、4月中には準備が整うだろう」との見通しを語った。
同席した萩原龍大チーム統括本部長は、バウアー獲得の経緯を説明し、「彼が沢村賞レベルの活躍を目指していると言っており、優勝に向けた強力な選手として期待している」とコメントした。
バウアーは、新型コロナウイルスの影響でシーズンが短縮された2020年のレッズで5勝4敗100奪三振、防御率1.73（最優秀防御率）を記録し、ナ・リーグのサイ・ヤング賞を受賞した32歳の右投手。NPBでプレーするサイ・ヤング賞受賞者は、1962年にドン・ニューカムが中日で外野手として1年間プレーして以来、61年ぶりとなる。
メジャーで通算83勝69敗1セーブ、防御率3.79を誇るバウアーは、2021年からドジャースと3年契約を結んでいたが、同年に女性への暴行容疑で警察捜査を受け（後に不起訴）、出場停止処分を受け、2022年シーズンを棒に振った。今年1月にはドジャースとの契約が解除された。
新天地での背番号「96」は、「目標の球速96マイルにちなんでいる」とのこと。新しいユニフォームを着用し、「とても軽くて着心地が良い。このユニフォームを着てプレーすることが楽しみだ」と笑顔で語った。バウアーは新しいチームでの活躍に期待が寄せられ、DeNAファンも彼の日本での成功を楽しみにしている。
