東大生が増えた会社は低迷する。その迷信が現実のものとなるのか、楽天グループが経営難に直面している。連結決算で売上高が前期比14.6％増の1兆9278億円となったが、過去最大の3728億円の赤字を計上。最終赤字は4期連続で、業績が改善されない状況が続いている。
経済の専門家が楽天の経営難の原因について語る。
「楽天はオンラインショッピングや金融事業は黒字なのですが、携帯基地局への莫大な投資により資本が枯渇してしまいました。さらに悪化する赤字に対処するために、昨年5月に『楽天モバイル』はデータ使用量月1ギガバイトまで無料の『0円プラン』を廃止しましたが、その結果、契約者数が大幅に減少しました」
慌てた三木谷浩史会長は「紹介キャンペーン」として、グループの社員に家族や知人の契約獲得を呼びかけましたが、これがさらなる問題を引き起こしました。
「理不尽な契約ノルマを抱えた紹介キャンペーンが、多くの社員の退職を招いてしまいました。現在は、幹部も辞め始めるという事態に陥っています」（関係者）
楽天はただ手を見るだけではありません。同グループは携帯事業部門のリストラや店舗閉鎖に取り組んでいます。さらに、NTTドコモ、KDDI、ソフトバンクが独占している電波の繋がりやすい周波数帯「プラチナバンド」の割り当てを総務省に要請し、これが割り当てられる可能性が現れてきました。
「ただし、プラチナバンドを獲得できたとしても、必ずしも契約者数の増加につながるわけではありません。楽天は窮地に追い込まれており、楽天銀行と楽天証券ホールディングスをグループから分離し、上場準備を進めていますが、それだけでは資金不足が解消されず、黒字化は非常に困難な状況です」（識者）
この厳しい状況の中で、楽天はさらなる事業再編やコスト削減に努めることが求められますが、それだけでは不十分であり、新たな収益源やイノベーションが求められています。
また、楽天の経営陣は、社員や顧客からの信頼回復に努めることが重要です。過去の失敗から学び、組織の風土を改善し、一貫性のある戦略と長期的なビジョンを示すことで、楽天の将来を明るくすることができるでしょう。
一方で、楽天の競合他社も同様に厳しい状況に直面しており、業界全体が競争力を維持するために革新的なサービスや技術を開発することが求められています。
