この短期決戦での圧倒的な勝負強さをWBCでも遺憾なく発揮し、メキシコ代表の「顔」となったアロザレーナですが、実は彼の出身はキューバです。彼はU-16やU-18の代表に選ばれるほどの逸材でしたが、19歳だった2014年に父が急死しました。家族の生計を支えるため、アロザレーナは亡命を決意し、翌年に実行に移しました。真っ暗な夜に、まるでカヤックのような粗末なボートでメキシコ湾へと漕ぎ出し、サメも泳ぐ危険な海を8時間かけて渡り、ようやくメキシコに上陸し、命がけの亡命を成功させました。
その後、メキシカン・リーグでのプレーを経て、2016年7月にカーディナルスと契約を結びました。また、彼の愛娘が生まれた土地であることから、アロザレーナはメキシコに並々ならぬ愛着を持っています。現在、彼の母、妻、子供、兄弟は全員メキシコ在住で、アロザレーナも毎年オフになると決まって「帰省」しています。
ワールドシリーズでの大活躍から数か月後の2021年2月、アロザレーナはインスタグラムを通じて「メキシコの市民権をください。そうすれば、メキシコ代表としてWBCに出場できます。私が望むものはそれだけです」と大統領に訴えました。そして、2022年10月になってようやくメキシコの市民権を獲得し、晴れて今回のWBC出場につながりました。
