私には、親しくなった数年来の女性の友人がいましたが、彼女に告白する勇気を持てませんでした。意を決して告白したとろ、彼女に身長が低いことで男性として見られないと言われ、失恋しました。その言葉は彼女を人を外見で判断しない誠実な女性と思っていた私にとって衝撃的で、自分に対する自信をさらに失ってしまいました。また、恋愛市場で競争力を持つためには、低身長のハンディキャップを克服しなければならないと感じるようになりました。そこからは勉強に力を入れ都内の名門とされる大学に入学したのでした。
しかし就職活動でも、再び身長の低さがネックとなりました。面接官に見下されることがあり、自分の能力を十分にアピールできないことが多かったです。また、企業側も身長に対して無意識のうちに偏見を持っていることが感じられました。面接が進むにつれ明らかに候補者の身長が高くなっていくのです。大企業の就職面接で低身長で残っている人は海外大卒や起業経験者などすごいスペックの人ばかりでした。結局、何度も失敗を重ね、やっとのことで就職先を見つけることができました。しかしそこは自分より成績やTOEICの点数の低いゼミの同期が大企業に就職していく中でその子会社レベルにも満たない企業でした。内心下に見て馬鹿だと思っていた同期に就職ではボロ負け、自尊心がズタボロになりました。内心いい会社に行ってステータスを得れば女性から相手にしてもらえるそう思って頑張ってきた計画が台無しになりました。
低身長の男性として生きてきた私は、子供を持つことに対して躊躇しています。自分が経験した苦難を子供にも背負わせたくないからです。また、遺伝的な要因も考慮に入れる必要があり、子供が同じような困難に直面するリスクを慎重に評価しなければなりません。
低身長男性に子供を作るなとは言いません。もちろん低身長でも成功していたり人生を楽しんでいる人は大勢います。しかし私の経験を通して、低身長の男性が直面する困難は数多く存在し、それらが人生に与える影響は計り知れないということ。将来子供を持つことを検討する際には、子供に与える影響を真剣に考慮して欲しいとそう思うだけです。
今は仕事を頑張り順調に出世して部下もできたというAさん。頑張りが報われていつの日か困難を克服し人生で幸せを掴んで欲しい。
