マスク氏がTwitterの関連コードをオープンソース化するアイデアを提案したのは初めてではありません。2022年3月、Twitter買収前に、彼はTwitterの投票機能を使い、「Twitterのアルゴリズムをオープンソース化すべきか？」とフォロワーに尋ねました。82.7％の回答者が「オープンソース化すべき」と答えました。
2023年2月22日の買収後にマスク氏は、「アルゴリズムのオープンソース化は最初はがっかりさせるかもしれませんが、急速に改善されるでしょう」とツイートしました。しかし、2023年2月にはTwitterのコードのオープンソース化は実現しませんでした。
ソフトウェア開発者のトラビス・フィッシャー氏は、Twitterのアルゴリズムを実際にオープンソース化できるかどうかについて検討しており、Twitterの関連性を評価するランキングアルゴリズムを簡略化した擬似コードを公開しています。
